Buying a metal building in North Wilkesboro, NC

North Wilkesboro is small enough that its building inspector works by appointment, and precise enough that its website tells you paying online does not get you a permit.

Inside town limits, inspections are by appointment. In the ETJ, all building inspections go through Wilkes County Building Inspections, (336) 651-7303.

Checked against the town’s and county’s own sites on November 1, 2026. Confirm before relying on a phone number.

In town versus the ETJ

The town’s page is explicit: building inspections in the extraterritorial jurisdiction are conducted through Wilkes County, and inspections for in-town properties are done by appointment with the town’s inspector. Wilkesboro proper, across the river, is a separate town. Three jurisdictions within a few miles; check the parcel.

Paying is not applying

The town lets you pay building and zoning permit fees online, and then says that payment does not issue a permit and that you must contact staff first. It is a small sentence that describes a large principle: a permit exists when the office issues it, not when money moves. The same principle applies to a seller who tells you the permit is “handled.” Ask for the permit number.

By appointment means you are present

When inspections are by appointment, the applicant books them and the applicant is expected there. If the contract makes you the applicant, as mine did, you are the one standing at the trench with the plans. Bring them, and ask the inspector to tell you what he measured.
