Looking up a contractor on the North Carolina Secretary of State site
The company name on the truck, the name on the contract and the name on the state’s books are three different things more often than you would think. Check all three match before money moves.
Where this comes from
My project record
The Secretary of State search is free and takes a minute. It will not tell you whether a company does good work. It tells you whether the entity you are about to pay exists, how long it has, and who stands behind it on paper.
Search the exact name on the contract
Mine reads L & G Building and Concrete LLC. Search that, then variations without the spaces and ampersand, then the DBA names you have seen. BBB lists an alternate name for L&G and a related company at the same address.
Check status and dates
Current-active is what you want to see. Note the formation date. BBB shows L&G as incorporated January 12, 2017. A company formed last month, or one that has been administratively dissolved and reinstated, deserves more questions.
Note the registered agent and principal office
The registered agent is who gets served with legal papers. The principal office address should match the contract. If the contract address is a different company’s, ask why.
Open the annual reports
Annual reports list the company’s officers or managers as filed. This is where roles get confirmed. On this site I do not publish anyone as an owner or manager unless a filing or another reliable source says so; the reports are how I check.
Search the people
Search the names of the principals you have been given as the name of a company officer. Related entities under the same people, at the same address, tell you who you are really dealing with and whether one has a license that another does not.
Save PDFs of what you find
Filings change. A dated copy of the status page and the latest annual report goes in your evidence folder next to the contract.
Questions this raises
What did you find about L&G Building & Concrete?
As of the last update, the corporate-records review is on my open list and I have not published roles beyond what BBB lists: Santos Garcia as owner, Michel Recendez as marketing manager, and David Cosme Lopez without a title. When the Secretary of State filings are pulled, what they show will go on the public records page.
Why a customer wrote this
In February 2026 I signed a $98,750 contract with L&G Building & Concrete of Asheboro, North Carolina. By September I had a cracked slab, damaged plumbing and half a steel frame. This site documents it, with the contract, photos, texts and public records. The resources exist so the next buyer does not need to learn the same things the same way.
