Slab Depth Before the Pour: About 4½ Inches on a 6-Inch Slab

April 2026, before the pour. Photo 1 of 8 from my own lot. Resized only; nothing retouched except where the caption says so.

What the photo shows

My project record

  • A tape measure standing on the vapor barrier of the prepared pad, with a yellow string line crossing the blade at roughly 4½ inches.
  • A rebar grid on chairs over 6-mil plastic sheeting, as the concrete contract specifies.
  • White PVC plumbing stub-ups in the background, standing straight.
  • Evening light; the pad was described to me as ready for concrete.

What it does not prove

It is one spot on one day. It does not establish the thickness of the finished slab anywhere, and the string line’s relationship to the finished surface is my reading of the scene, not a surveyed fact. Core samples would settle the finished thickness; I intend to have them taken.

Where it fits

Taken in April 2026 when I was told the pad was ready to pour. My contract specifies a 6-inch slab under the building at 3,500 psi, an upgrade over L&G’s 4-inch standard. The concrete balance of $37,605 was due when the pour was scheduled, so by the time this photo was taken the money had moved.
